Upstate

The abandonment of the manufacturing industry in America has weighed heavily on upstate New York, which now sits in the area known as the “Rust Belt.” This region is characterized by economic decline and dwindling population due to the relocation of manufacturers and the progression of automation. The images in this work examine the relics of the formerly booming economy in their context, situated in the rolling hills and valleys of upstate New York.

This project was made possible through a James A. Pendleton Grant.
